Comments:  Acuba japonica 'Variegata' or Gold Dust Plant or Japanese Laurel or Maculata Punctata or Variegated Japanese Acuba is an evergreen shrub with an upright growth habit. It is a native of Japan and is a relative of the dogwood family.  Acuba japonica 'Variegata' is dioecious with male and female flowers produced on separate plants.  In late Winter or early Spring, blossoms the small purple flowers on the male plant have yellow stamens while the female plant will produce bright red berries in the Fall provided a male plant is nearby.  The foliage of Gold Dust Plant is showy; it is smooth, glossy and dark green with yellow spots, making it an ideal foliage plant.  Japanese Laurel is easily propagated from seeds sown directly in the Fall or semi-hardwood stem cuttings taken in Summer.  It performs well in a part to full shade environment in well-drained acidic soil. Variegated Japanese Laurel is prized for its striking foliage which adds a sparkle to the shade garden. It is drought toleratnt and disease resistant.  Gold Dust Plant is carefree and low maintenance. It tolerates salt spray and air pollution.  Trim Maculata puctata in Spring for desired size and shape.  Mulch well to protect from frost.  Japanese Laurel stands out as a background plant.  It can also be container cultivated for the porch.  Variegated Japanese Acuba grows well as an understory where it receives filtered shade.  Mass plant Gold Dust Plant for an attractive hedge, fence or screen.  Plant them as foundation plant or grow near entryways for added colors.  Trim plant in Spring to maintain size and shape.  Acuba japonica 'Variegata' is a charmer and it is a terrific showstopper.
