Comments:  Adina rubella or Chinese Buttonbush or Glossy Adina is an ornamental shrub with a moderate, arching growth habit.  It is a native of China.  From late Spring till Fall, ornate fragrant, round pink balls of flowers appear atop attractive bronze-green smooth glossy leaves with red margins.  This is later followed by seeds.  The flowers have an unique fragrance and look very much like our American native Cephalanthus occidentalis.  Butterflies and bees are magnetized by the nectar-rich blossoms while the birds enjoy feasting on the seeds.  Chinese Buttonbush is easily propagated from seeds.  It performs best in well-drained, acidic rich wet or dry soil in a sunny to part shade environment.  Glossy Adina is low maintenance and tolerates drought when established, hence is ideal for xeriscaping.  Adina rubella makes an e;ye-catching foliage plant in the Fall when the foliage shows a more prominent red margin.   It is a great shrub for landscaping.  Chinese Buttonbush is an attention getter.

USDA Zones:  4-9
