Comments: Agastache mexicana or Giant Mexican Hyssop or Hummingbird Mint or Mexican Lemon Hyssop is a self-fertile perennial herbaceous plant with an upright growth habit. It is a native of southern United States and is a relative of the mint family. In late Summer, Agastache mexicana produces spikes of fragrant purple blossoms, followed later by seeds. Butterflies, bees and hummingbirds are magnetized by the nectar-rich flowers. Giant Mexican Hyssop has aromatic leaves. It is easily propagated from seeds and thrives best in well-drained, acidic, neutral or alkaline soil in a sunny or part shade environment. Hummingbird Mint self sows readily so deadhead spent flowers to avoid having volunteers. Mass plant Mexican Lemon Hyssop in beds for a delightful aroma and display. Agastache mexicana can also be container cultivated in colder areas and brought indoors for the Winter. The young leaves make delicious herbal tea and can also be used for flavoring foods.
