Aloysia triphylla or Lemon Verbena or Verveine or Aloysia citriodora or Lippia citriodora or Lippia triphylla is a herbaceous perennial shrub with an upright, moderate growth habit.  It originates from South America.  In late Summer, sprigs of fragrant lavender flowers appear, followed later by seeds.  Aloysia triphylla is leggy and it has aromatic narrow green leaves.  The foliage emits a refreshing lemony fragrance when you are around the plant.  Lemon Verbena is easily propagated from stem cuttings.  It thrives best in well-drained, sandy, loamy acidic, or alkaline soil in a sunny to part shade environment.  It does good in both a moist and dry areas.  Verveine blooms on new growth so trim in Spring before new new shoots appear.  It makes a wonderful foliage plant in the absence of its blossoms.  Use Aloysia triphylla as edging plants or grow it in a woodland setting.  The plant is a repellant for flies and other flying insects.  The leaves of Aloysia citriodora contains an essential oil has many uses.  The dried leaves makes wonderful potpourris and the scent can last for several years;  I use it as an air freshener for my car and I simply love the perfume. The fresh leaves of Lippia ciriodora can be used in salads;  they add a tangy flavoring to fish or chicken dishes.  The foliage also has medicinal properties and produces a mild sedative effect.  It is used in making a delicious and flavorful herbal tea for soothing stomach discomfort and other ailments.  Lippia triphylla is grown as an annual in colder areas.  It can be cultivated in a container and brought indoors for the Winter.  Enjoy the sweet aroma  as it freshens the home.  Lemon Verbena is delightfully growing in Jenny's Garden.
