Comments: Angelica gigas or Korean Angelica or Purple Angelica is a short-lived biennial herbal plant with an erect growth habit. It is a native of Asia. in late Summer at its second year, it produces fragrant purple blossoms followed later by seeds. Butterflies and bumble bees are magnetized by its nectar-rich flowers. Korean Angelica has herbaceous aromatic burgundy foliage. Purple Angelica is easily propagated from seeds. It thrives best in well-drained, moist, acidic soil in a sun to part shade location. Korean Angelica usually dies after flowering at second year. Mass plant for a stunning display in a woodland setting. Its stature looks striking in the back of perennial border. Angelica gigas has many uses. Its deep root has a licorice flavor and when cut, it o oozes a sticky sap which can be used as a glue. The Chinese popularly used Purple Angelica roots in traditional medicine. The leaves can be stewed to make a herbal tea or cooked in soup. The stems are cooked as a vegetavle. In its native habitat, Angelica gigas is found growing along streams and forest. Its ornamental dome-shaped flowerhead is a fabulous show-stopper.
