Comments:  Aquilegia vulgaris 'Leprechaun Gold'  or Variegated Columbine is a heritage perennial with a low, medium, mounding growth habit.  It has attractive ferny light green and yellow foliage.  In late Spring or early Summer, Aquilegia vulgaris 'Leprechaun Gold' produces small, deep purple blossoms, followed by seeds.  Hummingbirds are magnetized by its nectar-rich blossoms while florists are delighted with the attractive cut flowers.  Allow this short-lived perennial to self sow for a nice return next season.  Variegated Columbine is easily propagated from the seeds.  It thrives best in well-drained, sandy, clayey, acidic, neutral or alkaline soil.    Trim off leaves destroyed by sawfly or leaf miners at blooming time for a refreshing appearance. Deer and rabbits would not go near them.  Mass plant Aquilegia vulgaris 'Leprechaun Gold' in borders or as accent plants for a delightful display.  Use Variegated Columbine in rock gardens.  It really brightens the shade garden.

USDA Zones:  3-9
