Comments:  Arisaema ringens or Japanese Cobra's Lily or Devil's Nip or Indian Almond or Almond Turnip or Jack in the Pulpit or Pepper Turnip or Arisaema praecox or Arisaema sieboldii or Arum ringens  is a hardy perennial with a fast, tuberous growth habit.  It is a native of  China, Korea and Japan.  It grows well in temperate climates.  In early Spring Arisaema ringens produces ornate, stunning, cobra-like, purple and white striped spathe with downward curled tip, showing off the glossy purple interior, between 2 glossy green, fist-shaped, trifoliate foliage, on stalk a few inches above leaf.  This is followed by red berries in the Fall.  Japanese Cobra's Lily is low maintenance.  Arisaema sieboldii is easily propagated from seeds or offsets.  The offsets are easily snapped off and planted as an individual plant.  Indian Almond thrives best in a sunny or part shade location, in well-drained, moist, acidic to neutral soil.  Mass plant Almond Turnip in the woodland garden for an exotic display. Arum ringens can also be container cultivated in colder areas and brought indoors for the Winter.  Devil's Nip is an excellent ornamental plant for the shade garden.  Plant several plants for cross pollination to take place in order to produce fruits.  Clean Jack in the Pulpit seeds help germination process. Wear gloves when handling seeds as they can cause numbness in fingers.  Place harvested seeds in a zipbloc bag, clean seeds by squishing all the pulp from the seeds.  Clean them in water with several water changes then place seeds in potting mix and lightly cover with soil.   No cold treatment necessary.   Pepper Turnip provides Summer and Fall interests.  Arisaema praecox is really eye-catching and makes a great conversation piece.

USDA Zones:  5-9a
