Comments: Arum italicum or Cuckoo Pint or Italian Arum or Lord and Ladies is a bulbous perennial with a low, fast, clumping growth habit. It is a native of the Mediterranean and North Africa. In last Spring, Arum italicum produces white spathes followed later by stalks of green berry clusters which quickly ripens to showy, red-orange in late June. The leaves wilt at this time and the plants goes into dormancy. Lord and Ladies has exquisite variegated chartreuse yellow, smooth leaves that appears in late Summer or early Fall. Cuckoo Pint is easily propagated from corm divisions or seeds in late Summer or early Fall. It thrives best in well-drained, moist, humus-rich acidic to alkaline soil in a party shaded environment. Italian Arum can even thrive in clay. It self sows readily so remove spent blossoms to avoid volunteer plant next season. Lord and Ladies has a vigorous spread. Mass plant in between concretes or containers for an eye-catching display four seasons long. Arum italicum can be captivating if kept control.
