It is a native of China. In Summer, it produces 3-5 exquisite nodding, creamy-yellow blossoms with purple-yellow speckled lip on 20" long thin stalks; this is later followed by seeds. Bletilla ochracea is easily propagated from the seeds or from bulb divisions. It performs best in morning sun, in well-drained, rich, moist, acidic soil. Hardy Chinese Ground Orchid loves high moisture especially in Summer; reduce watering in Winter to prevent bulb rot. Mass plant Golden Chinese Butterfly Orchid in the perennial bed or as groundcovers in a woodland setting for an fabulous display. Mulch well in Winter. In colder regions, Bletillia ochracea can also be container and brought indoors for the Winter. Golden Chinese Butterfly Orchid attracts attention.
