Comments: Bletilla striata or Chinese Ground Orchid or Hyacinth Orchid or Peacock Orchid or Urn Orchid or White Chicken is a hardy terresterial plant with an upright clumping growth habit. It is a native of China and Japan. In Summer, Bletilla striata produces exquisite, long-blooming 5-petaled purple flowers with lower ruffled lips of same or different color. Each long scape holds a cluster of 3-7 small Cattleya-like blossoms, several of them opening at the same time; this is later followed by seeds. Florists are delighted with the exotic fresh cut flowers and the decorative brown seedheads. Chinese Ground Orchid has attractive upright, longitudinal pleated green leaves. Hyacinth Orchid is easily propagated from seeds, offset or bulb divisions. It thrives best in well-drained, moist, acidic or alkaline, rich, organic soil in a part shade environment. Mass plant Urn Orchid for a striking display in the border or along walkways for a closer view. Bletilla striata makes an interesting foliage plant in the absence of its flowers. Mulch to preserve moisture and protect from early frost. Peacock Orchid spreads by its short rhizomatous roots and soon forms a nice clump. Divide the corm-like pseudobulbs every few years if overcrowded. Bletilla striata can also be container cultivated for the home or office. White Chicken returns every year and naturalizes easily in the shade garden. It is an easy plant for the beginner gardener to grow. Hyacinth Orchid is very showy and is a happily growing in Jenny's Garden.
Hardy Chinese Ground Orchid is popularly cultivated for its ornamental beauty. It has been around for centuries. The Chinese find the corms very useful in traditional herbal medicine and have been using the dried corms in grounded power form to treat bleeding and swelling of the stomach, lungs and liver including blood clots, coughs, ulcers, burns and various lung diseases.
