Comments:  Calendula officinalis or English Marigold or Pot Marigold is a herbaceous annual with a low growth habit.  It is a native of southern Europe.  In late Spring or early Summer, Calendula officinalis repeatedly produces terminal orange blossoms atop green foliage.  Butterflies and bees are magnetized by its nectar-rich flowers while birds enjoy feasting on the seeds.    English Marigold is easily propagated from seeds.  It thrives best in well-drained neutral or mildly acidic soil in a sunny environment.  Pot Marigold is low maintenance and self sows readily so deadhead spent blossoms if you do not wish to have any volunteers next season.  It tolerates drought and is deer resistant.  Mass plant Calendula officinalis in borders or beds for a bright Summer landscape.  It can also be container cultivated for the sunny deck or patio.  English Marigold is a good addition to the butterfly garden and is popularly grown by many hobbyists.   It has been traditionally used as a medicine for many centuries for the treatment various ailments including cramps, inflammation, gastritis, eczema, inflammation, conjunctivitis and wounds.  Pot marigold has antiseptic properties.  A herbal tea made from the dried flower petals treats stomach ulcers.  The young leaves taste bitter and are used in salads.
