'Texas Scarlet' or Flowering Quince is a small, multi-stemmed flowering
shrub with an mounding, medium growth habit. It is native to China. In
late Winter or early Spring, Chaenomeles speciosa 'Texas Scarlet'
produces abundant fragrant red-orange blossoms on bare stems, before
leaves appear; this is followed later by apple-like fruits in Fall.
Butterflies and bees are magnetized by the nectar-rich blossoms.
Flowering Quince 'Texas Scarlet' has deciduous, glossy, alternate dark
green foliage and very few thorns. It is easily propagated from
semi-hardwood cuttings taken in Summer or simple layering. It thrives
best in well-drained, rich, acidic, neutral or mildly alkaline soil in a
sunny to part shade environment. Chaenomeles speciosa 'Texas Scarlet'
is low maintenance and tolerates drought conditions, hence excellent for
xeriscaping. Mass plant for a lovely hedge. Flowering Quince 'Texas
Scarlet' makes a lovely accent or specimen plant. It tolerates coastal
environment. Chaenomeles speciosa 'Texas Scarlet' is low growing and is
ideal for smaller gardens. The apple-like fruits cannot be eaten raw;
they make delicious preserves. Flowering Quice 'Texas Scarlet' is showy
and adds colors to the early Spring garden.
