Comments: Convallaria majalis or European Lily of the Valley or May Bells, Our Lady's Tears is a low-growing perennial with a rapid, dense clumping growth habit. It is a native of Europe. From mid to late Spring, Convallaria majalis produces long stems with exquisite nodding clusters of white bell-shaped fragrant blossoms, followed later by small round red berries. Some of the plants might not produce fruits. Butterflies and bees are magnetized with the nectar-rich flowers while the birds enjoy feasting on the seeds. The flowers make wonderful fragrant corsages. Lily of the Valley is easily propagated from seeds, offset or rootball divisions. It performs best in well-drained, moist, rich, acidic to neutral soil in light to full shade environment. Provide May Bells sufficient space for it to spread as it forms a nice colony. The dark green elliptical waxy, smooth foliage makes a lovely foliage plant for the Summer garden. The flowers of Our Lady's Tears make wonderful fragrant corsages. Plant them with some other low-growing groundcovers to mark the spot when the plants die back in warmer weather. Convallaria majalis is ideal for for naturalizing. Mass plant in a woodland setting or grow them in a difficult area to spice up the shady landscape.
