Comments: Coreopsis verticillata 'Route 66' or Threadleaf Coreopsis is a hardy herbaceous perennial with a vigorous, upright, clumping growth habit. This chance discovery in a nursery called Bauer's Forever Flowers by Route 66 in northwestern Pennsylvannia was appropriately named. In mid-Summer Coreopsis verticillata 'Route 66' prolifically duces very showy bright yellow 2" blossoms with maroon eye and maroon bleeding in the petals. This is followed later by seeds. In Fall as the weather cools, Threadleaf Coreopsis continues to electrify you as the delightful blossoms turn to a predominantly red color with deeper maroon rays and speckles on the petals, differing in every flower. Butterflies and bees are magnetized by the nectar-rich blossoms while birds enjoy feasting on the seeds. Coreopsis verticillata has attractive green, narrow, needle-like foliage borne on branched stems. It is easily propagated from rootball divisions and thrives best in well-drained, moist rich soil in a sunny to part shade environment. Threadleaf Coreops can also be container cultivated. It can tolerate drought when established and is low maintenance. Deers would not bother this robustic plant. Coreopsis verticillata 'Route 66' is a magnificient showstopper.
