Rabbit's Foot Fern or Davallia tyermannii or Humata tyermannii
is a tropical perennial fern with a compact, fast growth habit. It is
native to China. Davallia tyermanii has lovely dark green glossy
foliage. The rhizomatous roots have interesting white fur on them which
looks like soft rabbit's feet; they look exquisite as they grasp onto
the sides of the container. Bears
Paw Fern is easily propagated from rootball divisions; The furry
rhizome has to be a minimal of 2-3 inches long. Choose a fitting pot.
Use wet sphagnum moss to wrap the rootball, continue to fill rest of pot
to 2 inches below the rim. Allow the rhizome to lay above it and over
the rim of pot. Place plant in warm filtered shade till new growth
appears then to permanent location. Mass plant Silver Hare's Foot Fern
as eye-catching groundcovers in the partly shaded garden or in a
woodland setting. White Rabbit's Foot Fern is ideal for hanging baskets
or grow it in a clay pot. Divide plants when overcrowded. Davallia
tyermannii can also be grown in a terrarium or as a potted indoor
plant; place it where it can receive indirect light. Humata tyermannii
is a unique show piece and it easily starts a conversation.
