Comments: Dryopteris erythrosora 'Brilliance' or Autumn Fern or Copper Shield Fern or Japanese Red Shield Fern is a semi-evergreen foliage plant with a medium growth habit. It is not a native of USA. In Spring Dryropteris erythrosora produces young fronds in lovely shades of orange which turns green in Summer and finally turn to a beautiful coppery brown in the Fall. Spore bearing red sori appear on the undersides of fertile fronds in the Fall. Autumn Fern is easily propagated from rootball divisions. It performs best in well-drained, acidic to neutral moist soil in a part to full shade environment. Japanese Red Shield Fern is deer and rabbit resistant. Mass plant for a spectacular display in a woodland or cottage setting. It is ideal for containers or hanging baskets. Grow Copper Shield Fern as groundcovers or in mixed planting with other shade-loving plants in the shade garden. It is low maintenance. Dryopteris erythrosora 'Brilliance' is a terrific show stopper and is popularly cultivated by many hobbyists for its exquisite colorful foliage.
