Comments: Echinops ruthenicus 'Platinum Blue' or Globe Thistle or Echinops ritro ruthenicus is an ornamental perennial with an upright, multi-branching growth habit. It originates from Eastern and western Russia, North and central Asia, SW Asia, Asia minor, China and Japan. In late Summer, Echinops ruthenicus 'Platinum Blue' produces ornamental medium blue terminal round blossoms, followed later by seeds. Butterflies and bees are magnetized by the nectar-rich blossoms while bird enjoy feasting on the seeds. The cut flowers look great in floral arrangemens. Globe thistle 'Platinum Blue' has exquisite deeply cut, thistle-like silver basal foliage, borne on rough spiny silver stems. It is easily propagated from seeds, offsets or rootball divisions. Echinops ruthenicus 'Platinum Blue' thrives best in well-drained sandy soil in a sunny or part shade environment. It self sows readily so deadhead to avoid volunteer plants next season. Globe Thistle 'Platinum Blue' is low maintenance and tolerates drought conditions, hence an ideal plant for xeriscaping. Deers tend to avoid this plant. Mass plant Echinops ruthenicus in center of dry borders for a dramatic display. It looks great in mixed planting in containers. Echinops ruthenicus 'Platinum Blue' is popularly cultivated for its excellent foliage. It is a terrific showstopper.USDA Zones: 3-9
