Comments: Eutrochium maculatum 'Gateway' or Joe Pye Weed or Eupatorium maculatum is a perennial plant with a tall, compact, branching growth habit. It has green deciduous serrated foliage borne on interesting wine red stems. In late Summer, Eutrochium maculatum 'Gateway' produces showy, long lasting clusters of rose- pink blossoms, followed later by seeds. Butterflies and bees are magnetized by the nectar-rich blossoms while birds enjoy feasting on the seeds. Joe Pye Weed 'Gateway' is easily propagated from the seeds and it thrives best in well-drained, humus-rich, acidic soil, in a sunny to part shade environment. It self sows readily so remove spent flower heads to avoid volunteers next season. Joe Pye Weed is low maintenance and is tolerant o wet conditions. Eutrochium maculatum 'Gateway' provides Fall and Winter interests. Mass plant in the shade garden or in a woodland setting for a dramatic effect. Joe Pye Weed 'Gateway' can also be container cultivated. This plant possess medicinal value and is used for the trreatment of various ailements including asthma, gout, rheumatism, impotence and urinary tract problems. Eupatorium maculatum is showy and it attracts foot traffic.
