Comments:  Fatsia japonica or Fatsia or  Japanese Aralia or Paperplant is a beautiful evergreen shrub with a fast growth habit.  It is a native of Japan. Fatsia japonica has large showy deeply lobed, glossy foliage with pointed tips. In late Summer or early Fall, clusters of creamy-white blossoms appear followed later by green fruits which turns black when ripe. Butterflies and bees are magentized by the nectar-rich flowers while birds enjoy feasting on the seeds.  Leave seedheads to dry on plant and allow to dry before harvesting.  Remove fleshy coating then store for future use.  Paperplant is easily propagated from seeds or stem cuttings.  It thrives best in well-drained garden soil in morning sun with afternoon shade.  Japanese Aralia some humidity and is low maintenance.  It goes dormant in Winter; reduce watering at this time. Mass plant Fatsia japonica for an eye-catching landscape.  It can also be container cultivated for indoors.  Place indoor plant requires bright light, can reach about 6' and rarely flowers. Pinch tips of Fatsia to promote branching and a more rounded shape.  Japanese Aralia is very decorative and easily catches attention.
