or Large Fothergilla or Mount Airy Bottlebrush or Witch Alder is an attractive shrub with a slow, suckering growth
habit. It is a hybrid of Fothergilla gardenii and Fothergila Major. In late Winter, Fothergilla 'Mount Airy'
produces prolific fragrant white bottlebrush blossoms, making it a
highly sought ornamental plant. Large Fothergilla is easily propagated
from seeds, softwood cuttings or removal of suckers. It performs best
in well-drained, moist, acidic, humus-rich soil in a sunny to part shade
location. Mount Airy Bottlebrush has eye-catching green foliage with
white undersides which turns to spectacular hues of orange, red and
gold, providing a colorful Fall interest. Witch Alder Fothergilla makes
a wonderful shrub in a woodland setting. Its showy flowers commands
attention as a specimen plant. Fothergilla 'Mt Airy' is much sought after
as a foundation or border plant. It stops foot traffic in their path.
