Comments:  Fothergilla 'Mount Airy' or Large Fothergilla or Mount Airy Bottlebrush or Witch Alder is an attractive shrub with a slow, suckering growth habit.  It is a hybrid of Fothergilla gardenii and Fothergila Major.  In late Winter, Fothergilla 'Mount Airy' produces prolific fragrant white bottlebrush blossoms, making it a highly sought ornamental plant.  Large Fothergilla is easily propagated from seeds, softwood cuttings or removal of suckers.  It performs best in well-drained, moist, acidic, humus-rich soil in a sunny to part shade location.  Mount Airy Bottlebrush has eye-catching green foliage with white undersides which turns to spectacular hues of orange, red and gold, providing a colorful Fall interest.  Witch Alder Fothergilla makes a wonderful shrub in a woodland setting.  Its showy flowers commands attention as a specimen plant.  Fothergilla 'Mt Airy' is much sought after as a foundation or border plant.  It stops foot traffic in their path.
