Comments:
Persea americana or Avocado or Alligator Pear or Midshipman's Butter or Vegetable Butter or Butter Pear is a fast growing hardy fruit tree.  The Avocado fruits are nutritious eaten as a salad or whipped as a dip. There is a big seed inside each Alligator Pear fruit which can be esily grown and it is to be sown ASAP.  Persea americana is also propagated by grafting or air layering.  The dwarf varieties of Midshipman's Butter make nice indoor plants.  Butter Pear adds a tropical flair to the landscaping garden.  The most cold tolerant of all avocados are the Mexican avocados which are thin-skinned but they do not tolerate salt well.  The foliage of Mexican avocado has a distinct licorice scent..
USDA Hardiness Zones :  8-10
