Comments: Hypericum calycinum or Aaron's Beard or Creeping St
John's Wort is a fine looking deciduous shrub or groundcover.
It spreads readily by underground stems. This plant if grown in tropical
areas needs to be cut back to the ground every 3 years to promote new
growth. In cold areas, there will be tip dieback in Winter but
will return the following season. Hypericum calycinum is low
maintenance, easy to grow and is popularly grown as a groundcover or for
growing in problem areas.
Interesting Note: This plant has medicinal value. It had
been used since ancient times for the treatment of wounds and to
ward off spirit on eve of St Johns Day, hence the common name 'St John's
Wort'.
