Comments: Hedychium coronarium or Butterfly Ginger or Garland Lily or White Ginger is a hardy subtropical or tropical perennial with a rhizomatous spreading growth habit. It is a native of India. In Hedychium coronarium produces terminal, fragrant white, butterfly-like blossoms, followed by showy red seedpods. Butterflies especially monarchs and swallowtails are magnetized by the nectar-rich flowers; while at night, moths are very much attracted to them. Butterfly Ginger has lovely smooth, green foliage. It is easily propagated from rootball divisions and thrives best in well-drained, moist, acidic soil in a part shade to sunny environment. Garland Lily spreads by means of its thick rhizomatous roots. In milder Winter areas, the plant dies back and re-emerges next season. Plant in clumps close to the house or under a window to enjoy the refreshing fragrance. White Ginger Lily can also be cultivated in a large container. Mass plant in back of border or as foundation plants in marginal zones Hedychium coronarim adds a tropical feel to the Summer and Fall landscape. It is popularly cultivated by many hobbyists for its wonderful fragrance, low maintenance and ease of growth. White Butterfly Ginger is a terrific show stopper.
