Comments: Helianthus maximilianii or Maximillian Sunflower or Prairie Sunflower or Helianthus maximiliani or Helianthus dalyi is a tall perennial with an erect, vigorous, growth habit. It is a native of United States. In late Summer, Helianthus maximilianii produces long stalks of bright yellow flowers appearing on top of one another. Butterflies and bees are magnetized by the nectar-rich blossoms while song birds enjoy feasting on the seeds. Maximillian Sunflower has long, folded, coarse leaves with curved tip. It is easily propagated from seeds. Prairie Sunflower thrives best in well-drained, rich neutral to mildly alkaline soil in a sunny environment. It is a prolific self seeder so deadhead spent blossoms to avoid have volunteer plants next season. Helianthus maximiliani is low maintenance and deers tend to avoid this plant. Prune after flowering to maintain shape and size. Helianthus dalyi is deer resistant. Prune after flowering to maintain shape and size. Provide sufficient space for Maximillian Sunflower to grow. The abundant flowers tend to make the plant floppy. Mass plant Prairie Sunflower for a dazzling display in the back of the border. It add colors to the Summer landscape and is a terrific show stopper.
