Comments: Hibiscus syriacus 'Blue Bird' or Rose of Sharon or Shrub Althea is a hardy deciduous perennial shrub with an upright, vase-shaped growth habit. It originates from China and India. In early Summer, Hibiscus syriacus 'Blue Bird' produces showy large, saucer-shaped blue-violet flowers appearing from leaf axils; this is followed later by seedpods. Butterflies, hummingbirds and bees are magnetized by the nectar-rich blossoms. It has deciduous, ovate foliage and smooth grey stems. Rose of Sharon 'Blue Bird' is easily propagated from seeds, stem cuttings, hardwood heel cuttings. It thrives best in well-drained, moderately fertile, neutral to mildly alkaline, sandy, clayey, loamy soil, in a sunny to part shade environment. Shrub Althea 'Blue Bird' is a self seeder so deadhead if you do not wish to have any volunteers next season. It is frost tender so mulch well in Winter. It has smooth, gray stems. Prune 1/3 old wood in Spring to promote a rounded shape and larger blooms. Mass plant Hibiscus 'Blue Bird' for a mixed border for an exquisite display. Grow this eye-catching shrub as a magnificent specimen or in accent planting in the Summer landsscape. Rose of Sharon 'Blue Bird' tolerates coastal conditions. It is a terrific show stopper.
