Comments: Acacia pinetorum or Pineland Acacia or Pineland
Waffle or Sweet Acacia is an exotic tropical thorny shrub or small tree
with a moderate growth habit. Sun loving. From Spring to
Summer, it constantly bear very fragrant bright yellow blossoms with
rounded flowerheads followed later by eye-catching elongated brown
peapods.
Birds, bees and butterflies
are attracted to its nectar-rich flowers. It
is a host plant for nickerbean blue butterflies. Acacia pinetorum
propagates easily from seeds or semi-woody cuttings; it thrives well in
well-drained mildy acidic or alkaline sandy, rocky area.
Pineland Acacia is sun loving and tolerates
moderate coastal conditions.
It does not demand much attention and fixes its own nitrogen from the
air.
Pineland Waffle looks unique with its
zig-zag branches. Its
viscious thorns makes it an ideal barrier plant for the property.
Grow this spiney plant away from children and human traffic. It
can also be grown as an understory shrub. In its native habitat,
Acacia pinetorum
is found growing on shell mounds and pine rocklands.
The lovely intensely fragrant flowers and attractive umbrella-shaped
crown of leaves makes Sweet Acacia an
great accent plant for the landscape.
