Palm or Bottle Palm or Monja or Palma culona is a showy tropical perennial shrub
with a fast, erect growth habit. It has a distinctive big round
base. In Summer, mature plants bear large clusters of lovely white blossoms followed later by seeds. Ponytail
Palm is easily propagated from seeds; it performs well in a part shade
environment. It looks lovely as a specimen plant in the partly
shaded landscape. As it grows taller, its base gets bigger and its
crown of 'hair' gets longer and droops downwards, creating an exquisite
vista. Bottle Palm a can also be container cultivated; it adds a
tropical flair to the sunny deck or patio. It tolerates drought
and is low maintenance. Monja makes an excellent plant for the
home or office. Place it near a window where it can receive some
light. Fertilize Palma culona every month for optimum growth.
Repot when overcrowded, making sure at least a third of its bulb sticks
out of the soil to prevent root rot. Beaucarnea tuberculata has a long
life span; in its native habitat, living plants have been found to be at
least a century old.
