Jatropha curcas is pest resistant and can tolerate drought for up to 3 consecutive years, however the leaves will drop. This medicinal plant can be grown in any type of soil and is an excellent plant for countering soil erosion and pollution as it absorbs carbon dioxide. The leave drops are rich in nitrogen. The raw leaves are used in the making of dye, treat piles and clean and treat dental problems. The seeds contain non-edible Jatropha oil and is used in the production of soap and candles and as feedstock for biodiesel production; the Chinese used the oil as a varnish. When crushed, the seeds yeild 40 percent oil content that can power a standard diesel engine while the residue can be processed into biomass to power electricity plants. It looks very much like the butterfly bush when in bloom and is low maintenance and carefree. This shrub does not look too pleasing to the eye in Spring as the leaves only appear in late Spring or early Summer. Chaste tree is a magnet for bees and hummingbirds and it is has many uses. In ancient times, Athenian females have used this as a sexual suppressant, to remain chaste while worshipping the Greek Goddess of harvests, hense the name, Chaste Tree. Also have been useful in treating female problems. Southern European monks have brewed the leaves as a tea to lower their libido, hence the name Monk's Pepper. Provide shelter from strong winds and prune to size in Winter. The seeds have been used as a seasoning; the seed extract have been used as an insect repellent against mosquitoes, fleas, ticks and biting flies, lsting for at least six hours.
