Origin:  Southeast Europe, east-southeast Asia
Light:  Part shade-full sun
Height:  8-10' 
Spread:  12-14'
Blooms:  Showy, small, pure white flowers in mid-Spring
Fruits:  Orange-scarlet berries or pomes
Foliage:  Nice, evergreen, ovate
Soil:  poor, well-drained,  mildly acidic (pH 6.1-6.5)

Water:  Regular, drought tolerant when established
Propagation: Seeds (plant in Fall)
Insect / Diseases:  Lacebug, red spider mite
Uses: Hedge, screens, fencing, specimen, barrier, xeriscaping
Caution:  Plant is thorny, wear gloves
Comments:  Pyracantha coccinea  lalandi or Scarlet Firethorn is a beautiful thorny evergreen  shrub that bears a striking mound of flaming orange berries in the Fall that lasts into Winter.  Scarlet Firethorn is a drought-tolerant  shrub with a dense growth.  When grown in masses, Pyracantha coccinea  lalandi make a perfect hedge, espalier,  fence or wall for the xeriscaping garden.  Grown alone, it makes an attractive specimen plant.   Scarlet Firethorn provies an abundance  food source for wild life, butterflies, birds and bees.  The berries can be made ino delicious jellies.  Pyracantha coccinea lalandi is carefree, frost tolerant and fast growing.  Prune to maintain shape and size.  Use the cuttings with the brilliant looking berries on them for Christmas decorations. Scarlet Firethorn is a remarkable ornamental plant to have in the landscape.  Grown for its attractive deep green foliage and decorative fruits, it also provides an invaluable food source for wildlife and for birds like the mockingbirds, cedar waxwings and the cardinals which would nest build their nests on this shrub.  The bees love its beautiful flowers.  Pyracantha coccinea  lalandi is hardy to -20 degrees F and is one of my favorite Winter plant as it really brightens up my drabby looking garden at this time of the year.
