Comments:  Lonicera caerulea edulis 'Blue Velvet'  or Blue Velvet Honeyberry is a unique, hardy fruit-bearing shrub.  It is a showy, late-blooming hybrid.  After 1 or 2 years of planting, Loniicera caerulea edulis 'Blue Velvet' produces prolific, lovely yellow flowers in May, followed later by abundant blue berries.  Bird enjoy feasting on them and help transport the seeds. It has showy grayish-green, velvety leaves. Blue Velvet Honeyberry can be propagated from cuttings.  It thrives best in well-drained, moist, composted soil in a sunny or part shade environment.  Lonicera caerulea edulis 'Blue Velvet' enjoys heat and humidity.  Mulch with peat moss and composted manure to preserve moisture.  The interesting blue, elongated, edible fruits ripens in July and August.  They can be eaten fresh and are beneficial to our health as they are loaded with Vitamin C and are high in antioxidants.  Fresh fruits add colors in salads and can be used in many ways, as a juice, for baking bread, cakes or tarts, in pancakes or waffles, in ice cream or yoghurt. Excess fruits can also be frozen for future use.  Since 2 plants are required for fruit production, I have also planted Lonicera caerulea edulis 'Blue Moon' or Blue Moon Honeyberry in Jenny's Garden.  These two shrubs are terrific showstoppers in the sunny landscape in the north and the shady landscape in the south.  Lonicera caerulae edulis 'Blue Velvet' easily strikes up a conversation.

USDA Zones:  2-9
