Comments:  Lysimachia clethroides or White Gooseneck Loosestrife is a herbaceous perennial with an erect, fast, dense rhizomaous spreading growth habit.  It is a native of Japan and China and a relative of the primrose family.  In late Spring or early Summer,  4" long nodding white flower spikes appear terminally on stems, reaching a foot long at maturity.   These long blooming flowers are later followed by seeds.  White Gooseneck Loosesrife has deciduous, elliptical but mainly glabrous foliage.  It is easily propagated from rhizomatous root divisions or seeds and thrives exceedingly well in wet, rich soil in a part shade location.  Lysimachia clethroides has white rhimatous roots that help it to spread and very soon it forms a neat dense clump.  Its spread can be contained by growing it between concrete driveways or grow it in a container and plant it in a partly shaded drier area of the landscape as it can tolerate drought conditions.  Lysimachia clethroides is very showy but it is more recommendable for larger gardens due to its rapid spread.  Grow it at the edge of the garden; any excessive plants grown out of place can be easily mowed  down regularly.  In its native habitat, White Gooseneck Loosestrife is mostly found growing in moist places, along roadsides and streams.  This beauty is greatly admired and equally loathed by many but it definitely stops foot traffic in their track.

USDA Zones:  4-9
