Caution: Plant is invasive Comments: Lythrum virgatum or Purple Loosestrife or Wand Loosestrife is a herbaceous perennial with a fast, erect rhizomatous growth habit. It is a native of Europe and Asia. From late Summer to Fall, Lythrum virgatum, inch-long erect stems carries ornate terminal spikes of purple to pink flowers followed later by seeds. Butterflies and bees especially bumblebees and White Cabbage (Pieris rapae) are magnetized by the nectar-rich blossoms. It is easily propagated by seeds, or stem cuttings. Purple Loosestrife thrives best in well-drained, acidic or alkaline soil in a sunny environment. It tolerates boggy conditions. Lythrum virgatum self sows readily and soon forms a nice clump. It naturalizes readily. Divide Purple Loosestrife in Fall or Spring or cut back to contain spread. Grow them in containers or between concrete driveways helps. Mass plant Wand Loosestrife around ponds for a colorful display. It has been used for tanning leather and the root as a herb for treating various ailments including diarrhea, depression, epilepsy and nervousness. Lythrum virgatum is a showstopping plant.
