Oenothera lindheimeri 'Pink Fountain' or Appleblossom Grass or Gaura
lindheimeri is an ornamental hybrid perennial with a compact, clumping,
airy growth habit. It has herbaceous foliage. In mid-Spring, Oenothera
lindheimeri 'Pink Fountain' repeatedly produces soft pink flowers along
long slender stems, followed later by seeds. Butterflies, hummingbirds
and bees are magnetized by the nectar-rich blossoms. Gaura lindheimeri
'Pink Fountain' is easily propagated from seeds or clump divisions. It
thrives best in well-drained, rich mildly acidic, neutral or mildly
alkaline soil in a sunny environment. Grow Appleblossom Grass 'Pink
Fountain' in permanent location as it has tap roots and does not like
being moved. It can also be container cultivated. Gaura lindheimeri
loves heat and humidity. This vase-shaped perennial is tolerates
drought conditions and is excellent for xeriscaping. Mass plant
Oenothera lindheimeri 'Pink Fountain' in borders for a terrific
display. It self sows readily and forms a nice colony. Appleblossom
Grass 'Pink Fountain' naturalizes well. It is a sheer delight to watch
it dance with the wind, looking like little butterflies.
Interestingly,
this species is named after Ferdinand Jacob Lindheimer (1801-1879),
popularly known as Father of Botany, famed for his works as the first
permanent-resident plant collector in Texas.
