Hibiscus Cannabinus

Family:  Malvaceae
Origin:  Western Sudan, Africa
Light: Full sun, sun-part shade
Height:  4'-12' 
Spread:   3'-4'
Blooms:  Attractive, dark red, almost purple
Foliage:  Evergreen, large, ovate-shaped, lobed
Soil:  Well-drianed, drought tolerant
Water:  Regular
Fertilizer:  As needed
Propagation:  Division, seeds.  Sow seeds directly. 
Uses:  Background 
Caution:  Spiny, long cylindrical seed pods, wear gloves
Comments:  Hibiscus Cannabinus or Hibiscus Kenaf or October Rose or Brown Indian Hemp is a tropical perennial that is closely related to okra, cotton and hollyhocks.  These plants have been in existence in Africa for many years.  Among other uses, its nutritious leaves are mainly used for human and animal consumption there
. Plant together with marigold to keep nematodes at bay.
