It is named after a 19th Century British botanist, Robert Brown (1773-1858). Brunonia is a single species which previously belonged to the Brunoniaceae family but now belongs to the Goodeniaceae family. From Spring till frost, each plant produces charming 2 flowerheads comprising of a cluster of tubular, blue blossoms; the flowerheads rise atop a long, leafless, erect stalk rising from a basal rosette of long, green, silky soft, woolly foliage. Brunonia australis is easily propagated from seeds or plant divisions. It thrives best in well-drained, rich composted soil, a sunny or part shade location. Blue Pincushion self sows and is low maintenance. Mulch well to keep weeds from competition. However it is difficult to establihsed and has to be replanted every few years. In its native habitat, this monotypic plant is found growing wildly in dry, grassy woodlands, open forests and sand dunes. |
