Family:  Phytolaccaceae
Origin:  Native to the eastern half of the United States
Light:  Full sun/ sun-part shade
Height:  6'
Spread:  1-2'  
Blooms:  Cluster of small white flowers at end of long stem in early summer
Foliage:  Light green with red tinge, alternate, oval-shaped, about 9" long on red leafstalk
Soil: 
Wet, sandy, acidic-neutral  (pH:5.6-7.5)
Water:  Regular
Propagation:  Seeds (Remove fleshy coating on seeds before storing)
Uses:  Border, specimen, hedge
Caution:  Plant is invasive.  Wear gloves when handling plant.  Seeds are poisonous.  
Comments:  Phytolacca americana or  Phytolacca decandra or American Pokeweed or Polk Sallet or Polk or Pokeweed or Red Inkberry is a shrubby herbaceous perennial that is very easily grown. This plant has a purple stem and it is a birds, bees and butterflies attractant.  The interesting berry-like seeds are reddish-black in color. Phytolacca americana is a self-seeder and makes a nice ornamental plant.
