Comments: Gaillardia grandiflora or Indian Blanket or
Blanket Flower is a beautiful and
carefree mound-forming perennial
that tolerates both heat and cold. It attracts butterflies and
bees. Every year in Spring the Indian Blanket plants are the first
to emerges from my
garden. Gaillardia grandiflora really brighten up an otherwise gloomy looking garden
at this time of the year. I leave the seedheads on the plants so
the following year they return with many clumps. Bees and
butterflies especially the Red Admiral and Clouded Sulphur butterflies
feast on the nectar of the Blanket Flower.
Interesting note: Indian Blanket flower was adopted as the official state
wildflower of Oklahoma State on May 7, 1986.
