Comments: Rosa 'Peggy Martin' or 'The Peggy Martin Rose' is a
gorgeous looking climbing rose that was grown by Peggy Martin, a
Louisiana resident who had grown this from a 1989 hand-me-down cutting
before her home was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina which also took the
lives of her parents. The existence of this Gulf Coast survivor
rose carries a very sad story. According to Dr William C Welch,
Professor and horticulturist of A & M University, TX, "The Peggy Martin
Rose was one of only two plants surviving 20 feet of salt water over the
garden of Mrs Peggy Martin, Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana, after the
desctruction of Hurricane Katrina in late August 2005". A
fundraising project was started by the Greater Houston Community
Foundation to donate a dollor for the sale of each rose, helping to
rebuild parks, gardens and green spaces in New Orleans. I am so
delighted and proud to be able to own a piece of this sentimental
climbing thornless rose,
once a nameless rose and since then has been dubbed 'The Peggy Martin
Rose'. Some information about this beautiful famous rose is that
it is a hardy and vigorous rambler and is also carefree and
disease-free. From what I can see is that the Peggy Martin Rose has
bright green foliage, is thornless and is starting to put out some vibrant pink blooms
in late Winter. I will allow this gorgeous climber to smother my
arbor with its astounding floriferous blooms. When grown in
masses, the beauty of The 'Peggy Martin Rose' cannot be overlooked which
makes it a fabuoous choice for a decorative fence or attractive screen
in any garden or just let Rosa 'Peggy Martin' freely climb up a trellis
or arbor or pergolas and allow it togracefully and proudly display its
cascading beauty.
