Blooms: Attractive, very fragrant, clove-like perfumed, 2.5"-3.5",
early summer, single-petals,
violet-carmine-red with yellow stamens, all summer,
followed by huge 1"brick-red hips. Petals are edible, rich in
vitamin C
Foliage: Lush,
leathery, beautiful, dark green, heavily veined, wrinkled. 5-9
smaller leaflets in each compound leaf.

Soil: Well-drained, sandy loam, clayey loam,
poor, pure sand
Water: Plentiful

Fertilizer: Self-fertile
Propagation: Seeds (takes 90-120 days at 40deg F), division of suckers,
soft wood cuttings (from July-Sep), hardwood cuttings (Nov-early Mar,
store at 35-40 degrees F in sand or peat and plant in ground in spring with 1"
of cutting protruding above ground), layering
Uses: Mixed borders, ground covers, , perennial shrubs, low hedges, fences,
screens
Problems: Japanese beetles, mites, slugs, aphids, leafhoppers,
scales, powdery mildew, cankers, rusts, black-spot
Caution: Stems have dense, short, stiff needle-like thorns. Seeds have hair
which can cause mouth and digestive tract irritation if ingested.
