Comments:  Polygonatum hirtum or Dwarf Solomon;'s Seal or Glossy-Leaf Solomon's Seal is an outstanding perennial with a fast, rhizomatous growth habit.  It is a native of Eurasia.  In late Spring or early Summer, Polygonatum hirtum produces ornate clusters of exquisite bell-shaped, white flowers with green tips  stands out in the shade garden. on graceful, arching 2.5 ft stems, followed later by round ornamental bluish-black fruits.  It has herbaceous, deciduous, wide, oval-shaped light green foliage.  Dwarf Solomon's Seal is easily propagated from rootball divisions in early Spring.  It thrives best in well-drained, moist, rich, acidic to alkaline soil in a filtered shade environment.  Mulch with rotting leaves.  Mass plant Glossy-leaf Solomon's Seal in a woodland setting for a dramatic display.  It quickly forms a nice colony.  Polygonatum hirtum can also be container cultivated.  It is excellent for colonizing.  Use Dwarf Solomon's Seal around ferns or other low growing foliage plants.  In colder areas, lift rhizomes and store in a cool dry place.
