Comments:  Prunus subhirtella 'Pendula' or Weeping Cherry Tree or Weeping Higan Cherry is a medium size deciduous tree with a weeping growth habit.  It is a native of Japan.  In mid-Spring Weeping Higan Cherry produces fragrant pale pink blossoms appear on slender pendulous branches before the foliage appears.  This is followed later by fruits which can be difficult to spot as they are hidden by the leaves.  B
utterflies and bees are magnetized by the nectar-rich blossoms while the birds enjoy feasting on the fruits.  Prunus subhirtella 'Pendula' can be propagated from stem cuttings or grafting while germination from seeds are rare.  Suckers appearing below the grafted union on grafted trees have to be removed to promote a weeping habit.  It is best to enrich soil prior to planting and water well.  When established, Weeping Cherry Tree can thrive in moist, dry, compacted soil.  Use Weeping Higan Cherry as a single specimen plant in the landscape.  Grow one in the entranceway for a spectacular display.  It's such a delight to watch the weeping branches swaying with the wind.  Prunus suhirtella 'Pendula' is also popularly used as foundation plants.  This Japanese weeping beauty attracts a lot of attention and its beauty cannot be surpassed.
