Prunus mexicana or Bigree Plum or Fall Plum or Mexican Plum or Prunus americana lanata or Purunus lanata or Prunus mexicana lutonensis or Prunus mexicana polyandra or Prunus pensylvanica mollis is a hardy tree with an upright, growth habit.  It is a native of midwestern and southwestern USA and northern Mexico.  In late Winter or early Spring, Prunus mexicana produces abundant fragrant white to whitish-pink blossoms borne on bare branches before leaves appear.  The whole tree is white at this time of the season and it looks spectacular.  This is followed later by dark red round plums which ripens in the Fall.  Butterflies and bees are magnetized by the nectar-rich blossoms while birds enjoy feasting on the fruits.  Bigreee Plum has dark green deciduous, simple ovate foliage which turns to an exquisite orangey-yellow in Fall.  It has showy multi-colored bark.  Fall Plum is easily propagated from seeds.  It performs best in well-drained, alkaline or neutral soil in a sunny environment.  Mexican Plum is low maintenance and tolerates drought, hence  is ideal for xeriscaping.  It does not sucker and is much sought after for grafting purposes.  The ripe plums of Prunus americana lanata can be made into preserves.  This single-trunk tree is a Springtime blossoms extravaganza.
