Comments: Russelia equisetiformis or Coral Plant or Coralblow or Firecracker Plant or Fountain Plant is a tender tropical perennial with a low bushy growth habit. It is a native of Mexico. In late Spring, Russelia equisetiformis produces abundant tubular, trumpet-shaped red blossoms. Hummingbirds, butterflies and bees are magnetized by its nectar- rich flowers. Coral Plant has herbaceous evergreen stringy foliage. It is easily propagated from seeds, layering or rootball divisions. It thrives best in well-drained, acidic or alkaline soil in a sunny to part shade environment. Firecracker Plant is carefree and tolerates drought conditions. It is a self seeder. Trim after flowering to promote more blossoms and a bushier shape. Coralblow is execllent for hanging baskets. It looks exquisite as the plant cascades over the sides. Mass plant Fountain Plant in perennial beds for a spectacular display. In colder areas it can be container cultivated and brought indoors for the Winter. I love Coral Plant as it is low maintenance and really enjoy the beauty of the bright red firecracker flowers which contrast well with the bright green foliage. Russelia equisetiformis 'Salmon Pink' and Russelia equisetformis 'Yellow Gold' are also happily thriving in Jenny's Garden. Fountain Plant is a show stopper and attracts a lot of attention.
Other cultivars of Russelia equisetiformis are also available in colors of orange or white flowers.
