Comments:  Sambucus Nigra 'Eva' or Black Elder or Bourtree or Elderberry or European Elder is a magnificent looking tree with an erect, fast growing habit.   It is of hybrid origin by hybridizer Tolbutt (2005).  In mid-Summer Sambucus Nira 'Eva' produces gorgeous pale pink terminal flowerheads, providing a delightful contrasting color to the dark purple cut-leaved foliage.  Bees and butterflies are magnetized by the nectar-rich blossoms while the birds have a fiesta with the seeds.  Black Elder is easily propagated from softwood or hardwood cuttings.  It performs best in full sun to part shade.  Bourtree thrives best in well-drained, mildly acidic, neutral or alkaline soil.  It is low maintenance and insect resistant.  Elderberry is highly sought by avid gardeners for its ability to retain its original color.  European Elder is an excellent choice for the landscape.  It stops foot traffic in their paths.

USDA Zones:  4-7
