Comments:  Tithonia rotundifolia or Mexican Sunflower or Tagetes rotundifolia or Tithonia speciosa is a showy annual with an upright airy growth habit.  It is a native of Mexico and southwards.  From late Summer till frost, Tithonia rotundifolia produces masses of bright bright orange blossoms borne on long stems. looking like torches.  Butterflies, especially swallowtails,  hummingbirds and bees are magnetized by the nectar-rich blossoms while birds enjoy feasting on the seeds.  The freshly cut flowers make excellent floral arrangements.  Mexican Sunflower is easily propagated from seeds.  It thrives best in well-drained, acidic or alkaline soil in a sunny environment.  Tagetes rotundifolia is low maintenance.  It tolerates drought condition and is deer resistant.  Provide support if necessary.  The dried flowers are prickly so wear gloves when harvesting seeds.  Mass plant Tithonia speciosa at back of border for a colorful display.  It is very showy and attracts attention.
