Comments:  Valeriana officinalis or All Heal or Garden Heliotrope or Valerian  is a perennial herbaceous plant with anaggressive,  upright growth habit.  It is a native of Europe and northern Asia.  From late Spring to early Summer, Valeriana officinalis produces fragrant white flowerheads on 4' tall hollow stems followed later by seeds.  Butterflies and bees are attracted by its nectar-rich blossoms while the birds enjoy feasting on the seeds.  Garden Heliotrope is a food source for the Lepidoptera butterflies and moths.  All Heal has attractive green foliage.  It is easily propagated from rootball divisions or from seeds and thrives best in well-drained, fertile, neutral soil in a sunny to light shade environment.  Valerian is somewhat drought tolerant.  It self sows readily.  Provide sufficient space for Garden Heliotrope to spread.  The lovely scent of vanilla is welcoming as it permeates in the Summer garden.  The root of Valerian officinalis was popularly used in herbal teas centuries ago; it has a mild sedative effect.  All Heal is also used in perfumery when fresh.

USDA Zones:  4-10
