Comments:  Verbascum bombyciferum 'Artic Summer' or Silver mullein or Turkish Mullein is a very showy biennial with a wide, rosette growth habit.  It is a native of the mountains of Greece.  From mid-late Summer, bright yellow single-petaled, widely opened flowers appear on 2 feet long furry spikes, followed later by seeds.  Butterflies and bees are magnetized by the nectar-rich flowers and help pollinate it while birds enjoy feasting on the seeds and help transport them.  It has large, evergreen, basal rosette foliage that is uniquely covered with dense fur.  Verbascum bombyciferum 'Artic Summer' can be propagated from seeds.  It thrives best in well-drained, moist, poor to average, alkaline soil in a sunny environment.  Silver mullein has a long tap root so plant it in a permanent location.  Mulch for protection before it flowers the second year.  Turkish Mullein is low maintenance and tolerates drought when established, hence excellent for xeriscaping.  Its is a self seeder and has a short life span of about 3 to 4 years.  After flowering, Verbascum bombyciferum 'Artic Summer' will die back and remerge in Spring.  Its dried stalks create interest in the Fall and Winter  landscape,  Mass plant Turkish Mullein in the arid garden for a captivating frosty display.   Pinch away the flowers for an exquisite foliage plant.  The tall stature of Silver Mullein makes a statement in the rock garden.  This uniquely tough and beautiful biennial easily strikes up a conversation.  It is breathtaking and make heads turn.
