Comments:  Verbena bonariensis or Brazilian Verbena or Purpletop Vervain or Upright Verbena is a flowering perennial herbaceous plant with an upright, widely-branched, open airy growth habit.  It is a native of native of USA.  In mid-Summer, Verbena bonariensis produces long stalks of purple flowerhead, followed later by seeds.  Butterflies and bees are attracted to the nectar-rich blossoms while birds enjoy feasting on the seeds.  The freshly cut flowers of Brazilian Verbena looks lovely in bouquets while the dried flowers make excellent dried floral arrangements.  Purpletop Vervain is easily propagated from stem cuttings or seeds.  It performs best in well-drained, neutral pH soil in a sunny environment in Fall.  Upright Verbens is low maintenance.  It tolerates drought conditions and hence is ideal for xeriscaping.  Verbena bonariensis self sows readily so deadhead to prevent volunteers next season.  Mass plant for support in a mixed perennial bed for a delightful display.   Grow Purpletop Vervain in a wildflower garden and allow it to reseed freely.  It can also be container cultivated in colder areas and brought indoors for the Winter.  Brazilian Verbena is easy and carefree and very likeable.
