Comments:  Viburnum lentago or Nannyberry or Sheepberry or Sweet Viburnum is a large flowering shrub or a compact small tree with an upright, suckering growth habit.  It is a native of USA.  In late Spring, Viburnum lentago produces white, non-fragrant flowers, followed later by fruits.  Butterflies and bees are magnetized by the nectar-rich blossoms while birds enjoy feasting on the seeds.  Sheepberry has lustrous, smooth, deciduous foliage and turns a beautiful deep red-orange in the Fall.  The edible fruits taste sweet and juicy when ripe and excess can be made into jelly or jam. Sweet Viburnum can be propagated from seeds which takes 2 years to germinate or stem cuttings.  It thrives best in wet, acidic, neutral or alkaline soil in a sunny to part shade environment.  Nanny goats enjoy feasting on the seeds.  Native Americans used the leaves and bark of Sweet Viburnum as a herb.

USDA Zones:  2-8
