Aristolochia elegans

Synonym:  Aristolochia littoralis
Family:  Aristolachiaceae
Origin:  Native to South America
Light:  Light Shade

Spacing:  3-4'   
Blooms:  Fragrant, unusual, tubular-shaped like a 19th Century Dutch pipe.  It has greenish-white outer petals and very interesting purplish-brown calico-patterned innter petals 
Foliage:  Attractive bright green, heart-shaped, dense  mass
Soil:  Well-drained, light, sandy

Water:  Regular
Propagation: Seeds, semi-woody cuttings, layering
Uses:  Trellis, screening, fencing, arbor, container
Caution:  Plant may be invasive.  All part of this plant is poisonous.
Comments:  Aristolochia elegans or Pelican Flower or Calico Flower or Elegant Dutchman's Pipe or Aristolochia littoralis is a beautiful tender evergreen tropical vine that can tolerate some drought. This is an attractive plant with breath-taking colored blooms that draws a lot of attention from many passer-by.  Freezing temperature in Winter will damage the top of the plant, however the roots will sprout new shoots when Spring comes along so it is quite a hardy vine.  Calico Flower plant is a self-seeder and a butterfly attractant.  The leaves of this hardy climber provide food for the larvae of  many speicies of butterflies.
